Thermostat replacement for appliances

Thermostat replacement is often needed in many appliances. They are especially needed when the appliance needs temperature maintenance.

What is a thermostat?

Thermostat Replacement

A thermostat maintains an appliance or a certain designated area at a particular set temperature. It detects the temperature changes in the appliance it is being used. When the temperature reaches a certain level, thermostats automatically cool them down.

Working

Solids, liquids and gases expand on heating and contract on cooling. The only exception is water that exhibits anomalous behaviour.Thermostats also exhibit similar contraction and expansion for controlling and measuring temperature. Home heaters and air conditioners make use of a bi-metallic strip for detecting the change in temperature.

Applications

Thermostats are commonly used in electric irons, cars, incubators, heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators and since these items are used often thermostat replacement is a common thing.

A thermostat regulates temperature in equipment and appliances and therefore if it gets destroyed thermostat replacement is necessary. In cars, thermostat regulates the flow of water in the cooling system. It operates a valve which opens when water reaches a certain temperature. The open valve then lets water circulation through radiator and water jacket surrounding the engine. So it thermostat replacement is not done in time, it increases the chance of accidents.

Process of thermostat replacement

In case your car is hotter than normal, then it is an indication that the thermostat has worn out or will wear out very soon.

You will need:

a)    Brand new thermostat

b)    Gasket and its sealant

c)    Scraper

d)    Emery cloth

e)    Lubricant

f)    Pliers and screwdrivers

g)    Open wrench set

h)    Gloves

Procedure

1.    Buy a good gasket, thermostat and sealant that are specific to your car model from a recognised auto dealer.

2.    Place a rag over the radiator cap and turn it slowly so that the pressure is released gradually. Completely remove the cap when the hissing stops.

3.    You will find a two inch black hose popping out at the top of the car radiator. This hose needs to be clamped on the cover of thermostat which has two bolts on either side.

4.    Now you have to take out hose using screwdriver and pliers. The clamp must be pulled off.

5.    Slightly twist this hose so that it gets loosened from the cover of the thermostat. You can use lubricant for this as well. When the hose is taken off, some coolant will spill out.

6.    Loosen the bolts on thermostat cover using an open wrench and then lift its cover to remove the thermostat.

7.    Using a scraper scrape out old gasket on the coverand its base.

8.    Scrape off traces of gasket using emery cloth. Ensure that the cover with base are clean to avoid leakage.

9.    Drop down the engine using spring mechanism.

10.    Apply the gasket sealant on the cover of the thermostat so that it comes in contact with the base cover and engine. While placing the gasket on the cover base, make sure that the holes are lined up.

11.    Now replace the cover and bolt the screws properly.

12.    Next step is to get radiator hose replaced.

13.    Let the sealant dry and then start the engine.

14.    Start and run the engine till it reaches normal temperature. Then check the hose and cover for leakages.

15.    Before finishing coolant level should be checked and refilled.

Thermostat replacement is very necessary when you want all your gadgets to work efficiently.
